Melbourne family escapes unharmed after car slams into their home

A driver who ploughed his car into the home of a sleeping family is believed to have been trying to escape the scene of an earlier collision.

Police said the crash, which occurred in Melbourne's Croydon North, happened moments after another impact on nearby Exeter Rd.

"He's then attempted to drive away from that collission at a high rate of speed," a police spokesman said. "He's then lost control of the vehicle and ended up crashing into the garage of the house."

The car slammed into the family's garage with a mother, who was sleeping in the room next door to the garage, and two young girls all remarkably escaping uninjured.

One of the home's residents, Peter, was at work when it happened and rushed home to immediately check on his family. He said they were woken by an "almighty bang".

"It's a big mess inside as you can see," Peter said. "Our car was inside as well and as you can see it's a write off...I've got a fair few collectables in there as well."

"We are trying to get the power back on in the house now. It's going to be a long couple of days until we get back to normal."

The driver of the vehicle was also believed to have been uninjured, despite crashing through as many as three front yards before the impact.

The driver was breath tested at the scene and police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
