Police hunt mother of abandoned baby found on doorstep

A two-day-old baby boy has been found on the doorstep of a home in the NSW Riverina town of Griffith.

Residents discovered the baby in a pink cloth bassinet outside their front door, after answering the doorbell just before midnight on Sunday, police said.

The baby, believed to have been born on Friday morning, was taken to Griffith Base Hospital for assessment.

"The baby is well, normal and healthy," a spokeswoman form Murrumbidgee Local Health District told AAP on Monday.

The newborn is now in the care of Family and Community Services, she said.

Police are concerned for the mother, who's believed to be in her teens, and are urging her to come forward.

Just two weeks ago NSW Deputy State Coroner Hugh Dillon urged the NSW government to consider introducing drop-off boxes at hospitals to allow mothers to anonymously leave unwanted infants.
