Young girl dies after brown snake bite

A young girl has died after she was bitten by a brown snake on a property near Walgett in northern New South Wales.

Police say the six-year-old was bitten at about 3pm on Friday February 5.

She was taken to the local hospital where anti-venom was administered, before being airlifted to Sydney Children’s Hospital where she was placed on life support.

The young girl was transferred back to the Walgett Hospital after her condition significantly deteriorated.

She passed away on Saturday February 13.

Emergency Services say in light of the tragic incident it is a timely reminder to ensure someone calls Triple zero immediately if someone is bitten by a snake.

NSW Ambulance says if the bite is on a limb, apply a pressure immobilisation bandage until help arrives, but make sure it is not so tight it will cut off circulation.

If the bite is not on a limb, the ambulance service says direct and firm pressure should be applied to the bite site with your hands.

It is also important to check items of clothing left outside before wearing them, and if you are moving something make sure it is facing away from you before it is lifted up, according to NSW Ambulance.
