Top cop stood aside after a man was allegedly run over

A police officer who allegedly ran over a man early on Monday morning in Cairns has been stood aside while an investigation into the incident is underway.

The 37-year-old man who was allegedly run over by Assistant Commissioner for the northern region, Paul Taylor, is deceased.

Queensland Police say Assistant Commissioner Taylor was allegedly driving into work at about 4:20am when the incident occurred outside the Sheridan Street police complex in the CBD.

Specialists are on their way to North Queensland to help with the investigation.

The man, who was thought to be from Longreach and visiting Cairns, was declared dead at the scene.

Commissioner Ian Stewart addressed the media in Brisbane this morning," The condolences of the entire service go to the family of the deceased person."

"I can only imagine the challenges and the thoughts for Mr Taylor today."

"This is tragic on so many levels, "he said.

A report is being prepared for the coroner and the police ethical standards unit is investigating.

Commissioner Ian Stewart said an independent and thorough investigation will be carried out.
