Housemates threatened by man who had 'just killed a woman'

Two housemates have been threatened by an intruder who told them he had "just killed a woman".

He entered the home looking for a car to steal following one of two stabbing incidents in Melbourne’s south-east on Monday.

The man had just been at a Berwick house where he had stabbed a woman he knew.

Housemates Jamie Bailey and Kaila Battams were expecting their regular lawnmower man, who usually let himself in.

But this morning, someone else was in their home.

“When I got out of bed, he was in the kitchen and it was not [the lawnmower man], it was a stranger and he came running at me saying ‘can I have your keys, I have just killed somebody,’” said Kaila.

“He was just obviously shocked himself cause he had just tried to kill somebody,” she said.

The intruder had fled the scene of the nearby stabbing and was looking for a getaway car that he could steal.

“I was half asleep and in shock and I said ‘hold on, hold on, I’ll find them,’ and he kept being a bit erratic and yelling at me: ‘give me the keys, give me the keys, I’ve just killed someone,” she said.

He eventually took the keys - but he was trying to start the wrong car.

That was not his only get-away problem.

“My driver-side door is broken so you have to get in the passenger side door so I had to explain this to him,” said Mr Bailey.

The man finally got in and drove off, and he is still on the run with Mr Bailey’s green Toyota Corolla Sedan.

“He was wearing a black t-shirt, black shorts, possibly wearing runners, Caucasian male, aged in his 20-30s,” said Detective Senior Constable Matthew Davey.

Despite the attacker claiming he had killed a woman, her stab wounds are not life threatening, and she is now recovering in hospital.

In a second, separate stabbing incident, a man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was attacked this morning in Seaford.

One neighbour, Trudie Winton, said she heard “a lot of yelling and abuse at the front door” that woke her up.

The 45-year-old man was knifed in the back and tried to escape but he was chased by his attacker and slashed in the throat.

Police believe a 46-year-old man who is known to the victim is responsible and is still on the run.
