Grandmother cuts up $1.5m to stop family inheritance

An elderly grandmother cut up her $1.5million fortune into thousands of tiny pieces so that her family would not be able to inherit it after she died.

The unnamed 85-year-old from Austria neatly cut the notes and savings accounts book and left them on the bed in her nursing home, according to German newspaper Kurier.

She died just a few days later.

The exact reason behind her actions was not clear but authorities believe she did it to spite her family.

Austrian state prosecutor Erich Habitzl said: “The damage of the money in the woman’s property is not a criminal matter, so we have not begun any investigation.”

However, the woman’s family may still be able to get their hands on the money as Austria’s central bank confirmed that they can replace it.

Friedrich Hammerschmidt, deputy head of the bank’s cash division confirmed: "If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced.

"If we didn’t pay out the money then we would be punishing the wrong people.”
