Second suspect arrested in CBD siege

South Australian police found a second man wanted over a break-in and siege in an Adelaide building, hours after the first man was shot.

Police say the second man was found inside the building but did not have a firearm.

It's believed the two men broke into a business on East Terrace and were spotted on the roof of the building by a member of the public at 5.15am on Saturday.

Police shot a 41-year-old man from Northfield six hours into the siege.

He's in a stable condition in Royal Adelaide Hospital, but police spent several hours combing the building for the second alleged offender.

Detective Superintendent John De Candia says he cannot identify the second man yet.

"It's too early at this stage to say exactly where he was found. I believe it was an upper level where he was located," he told reporters at the scene.

"To ensure the safety of the operation, (there was) a methodical search of the premises and we were only going to leave when we were 100 per cent satisfied that he was not in the building."

Det Supt De Candia said police would now search the building to ensure a firearm wasn't hidden inside by the second man.

He said two loaded shotguns were found by police - one on the roof and another in a car parked in a nearby lane.

The wounded man was shot in the upper body.

Det Supt De Candia said the injured man had been charged with firearms offences and aggravated criminal trespass, with other charges expected to follow.

An independent senior officer will investigate the shooting, he says.

Earlier in the day witnesses heard two shots fired during the stand off between police and two would-be robbers in Adelaide's central business district.

Police were alerted to the attempted break in on the Ouwens Casserly Real Estate agency on East Terrace at about 5.15am, when two men were spotted on the building's roof.

Officers reportedly found firearms inside a car nearby and have spent much of today trying to take the two men believed responsible for the robbery-gone-wrong into custody.

Police negotiators spent most of the day trying to resolve the situation and heavily armed STAR Force officers had the area in lock down for hours.
