'Suspicious device' found under parked car harmless: police

Police say a 'suspicious device' found under a parked car in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley is harmless.

Authorities were called to an address on Arthur Street around 7.40am (AEST) on Thursday morning.

An emergency situation was declared and an area roped off between James and Chester Street.

Specialist police were called to the scene.

Acting Inspector Gregory Veivers said the object, which was about 30 centimetres big, looked like a GPS device and was attached to the bottom of the vehicle.

"A device has been located, it is harmless and will be the subject of further examination by our scientific team and detectives," he said.

"It was pretty basic, slightly elaborate, but basic.

"The vehicle is safe."

Investigations are ongoing.
