SA MP Finnigan in court over child porn

A South Australian politician will today face court on child pornography charges, almost four years after his arrest.

South Australian upper house MP Bernard Finnigan is due to stand trial in Adelaide on two child pornography charges this morning.

Finnigan, 42, has been charged with one count each of obtaining access to child pornography and attempting to obtain access to child pornography.

The trial, in the South Australian District Court, will be heard from Monday before a judge alone.

Finnigan was arrested in 2011 after raids on his home allegedly uncovered child exploitation material on his computer.

The charges led to him standing down as a minister, however, Mr Finnigan has remained in the state's parliament in the lead up to his trial.

If found guilty the former industrial relations and local government minister faces sentences of up to five years in jail for each charge.

Opposition MPs have welcomed the trial, saying South Australians have waited too long to see the matter dealt with by a court.
