The annual Summernats car festival has wrapped up at Exhibition Park in Canberra, after sending the rumble of hotted-up car engines floating over the city's north for four days.

On Thursday about 200 street machines and their proud owners rumbled down Canberra's main thoroughfare as part of the annual Summernats city cruise.

During this year's Summernats more than 100 cars also set a new world record for the most burnouts performed simultaneously.

The festival also featured show car judging, the naming of Miss Summernats, burnout competitions and fireworks.

Throughout the weekend, the hum of car engines from the festival could be heard kilometres away.

Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez said the event was a celebration of street machines offering something for everyone.

"It's absolutely revhead heaven," he said.

"You don't see anything like this event anywhere else in Australia or the world.

"It's one of a kind and even if you're not into cars you can just come here and love every minute of it."

As in previous years, there was a high police presence at the event this year.

About 100,000 people were expected through the gates during Summernats 2015.
