Summernats street machines take part in city cruise in Canberra

About 200 street machines and their proud owners have rumbled down Canberra's main thoroughfare as part of the annual Summernats city cruise.

Parts of Northbourne Avenue were closed for about an hour from midday on Friday.

During this year's Summernats more than 100 cars set a new world record for the most burnouts performed simultaneously.

Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez said the city cruise was a way to put on a free show for the Canberra community.

"It's a great sight seeing all those beautiful cars on the road at one time," he said.

"The cars range from original classics through to heavily modified cars, they show off every aspect of Summernats.

"It brings Summernats to a wider audience."

Mr Lopez said the car festival was not just a wild, crazy event.

"Some of the guys have put five years of work into these cars, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars, but most importantly spent hours or days or months working on their pride and joy," he said.

He said owners of the street machines would not risk pulling any dangerous pranks on the road.

"They don't spend hundreds of thousands of dollars building a car just to smash it around on the street or in a carpark," he said.

"They want to bring it to events like this to show off what they've done and how much they love their car."

About 100,000 people are expected through the gates during the four day event, which ends on Sunday.
