MOFO line-up revealed in Hobart: MONA festival returns in 2015

The line-up for the Museum of Old and New Art's Festival Of Music and Art (MOFO) promises a vibrant mix of music and performance from around the world.

Violent Femmes bass guitarist Brian Ritchie has again gathered an eclectic mix of music for the seventh MOFO.

"We always like to put total unknowns alongside the well-known names because to be curating a festival like this, it's different than trying to do a commercial festival," said Ritchie.

"A curator really needs to put a light on unexposed talent."

Running from January 15 to 18, the festival will feature Paul Kelly's Merri Soul Sessions with performances from Australian soulster Dan Sultan.

Amanda Palmer will make a welcome return, this time teaming up with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Gotye will make a guest appearance with indie pop outfit Zammuto and former Midnight Oil guitarist Jim Moginie will be bringing his electric guitar orchestra.

Other highlights include Swedish metal band Marduk and Syrian techno star Omar Souleyman.

MOFO has become a staple on Tasmania's events calendar.

More than 28,000 people went to this year's event, almost half were from interstate or overseas.

One of the big attractions for 2015 is a giant inflatable castle that will serve as a floating performance space on Hobart's River Derwent.
