Optus to boost 4G in country Australia

Optus subscribers in some 200 regional areas are set for faster mobile internet as the telco expands its 4G network.

Optus says the upgrade will bring its 4G coverage to 90 per cent of the Australian population by April.

Some older phones won't be compatible, but Vic McLelland, Optus's networks chief, said the upgrade should ease congestion on the slower 3G network.

"We have invested significant resources into upgrading existing mobile towers to meet the increasing data demands of our customers," he said.

The rollout will use two recently-acquired chunks of spectrum space: 2600MHz, available from this month, and 700MHz, available from January 2015.

Optus is looking to catch Telstra, which brought 4G coverage to about 300 regional towns and popular holiday spots last year.
