ACT Public Trustee Office fraud estimated at $1.6m: report

The total amount involved in an alleged fraud involving two staff at the ACT's Public Trustee Office has been estimated at more than $1.6 million.

The fraud came to light in January and two people allegedly involved have been suspended pending disciplinary action.

Investigators have alleged the money came from accounts held in trust by the office.

The Public Trustee annual report showed $355,000 has already been reimbursed and the remaining $1.3 million is an estimate, including interest, which has yet to be paid out.

The money will be claimed from insurance.

Raids in May, in relation to the fraud, uncovered documents, cannabis and hydroponics equipment.

Police have yet to charge anyone over the offence.

In his report the Public Trustee Andrew Taylor said the office had been shaken by the events.

"Whilst the discovery has understandably shaken the office, the irregularities have been dealt with swiftly and are currently the subject of ongoing investigation by ACT Policing and KPMG Forensic," he said.
