Accused torturer to remain in custody

A Queensland man will remain in custody until at least next month, after being charged with torturing and trying to murder his housemate.

Police found a badly injured 51-year-old man at a house at Ipswich, west of Brisbane, on Sunday, after reports of a disturbance.

Officers had to perform CPR on the man, who was in a critical condition.

Kenneth Beattie, 50, faced the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday charged with attempted murder and torture, a Department of Justice spokeswoman said.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in the same court on August 20.
