Police Easter crackdown

Police Easter crackdown

Almost three hundred uniformed and plain-clothed police officers flooded the state's 'hot spots' overnight to target anti-social behaviour, as part of Operation Unite.

Police say the aim of the operation is to draw attention to the broader implications associated with the misuse of alcohol in public, such as health and injury problems, crime and the impacts on policing.

More than 70 people were arrested for charges including obstructing police, possessing a dangerous drug and possessing a weapon in public.

The Deputy Commissioner Specialist Operations, Ross Barnett said,'The Operation is not about ruining anyone's fun but instead it focused on cracking down on alcohol misuse, violence and anti-social behaviour.

'The aim is to make everyone feel safer and more secure while enjoying time with family and friends across the Easter long-weekend.'

Operation Unite continues tonight and will finish on Monday.

Meantime, police also began their Easter Road Safety Campaign, enforcing the 'Fatal Five' across the state's roads.

More than 50 drivers were charged with drink driving.

And more than 3,300 drivers were detected speeding, with the highest speed detected at Ormeau on the Pacific Motorway, with a car travelling at 165 kilometres per hour in a 100km/hour zone.

The road safety operation continues until 23.59pm on Monday the 21st of April.
