Qantas planes clip wings in LA

Hundreds of Australian passengers spent the night in hotels after two Qantas planes clipped wings at LA airport.

No passengers were on board when the wing tips of an A380 and B747 came into contact at about 9pm LA time, Qantas said on Friday.

The damage was substantial enough to force the cancellation of flight QF94 to Melbourne and QF16 to Brisbane.

The damage bill is expected to soar above $3 million.

The incident caps off a bad week for the airline, after Alan Joyce announced the company would slash 5,000 jobs over 3 years.
