Greens support new school sex case inquiry

The Greens have officially green lighted a parliamentary inquiry into the South Australian premier’s handling of a notorious school rape case.

They have supported a new probe into the school sex scandal, saying the Debelle Inquiry was too prohibitive.

That inquiry cleared Premier Jay Weatherill, but did not explain why his key staff wiped crucial emails and failed to alert him or Minister Grace Portolesi to the crime.

Critics want to dig much deeper.

“This is a noose around the Weatherill Government’s neck and they need to clear this up,” Greens MP Tammy Franks said.

State Parliament resumes tomorrow after the winter break and the federal election.

The Premier’s opponents are lining up to thrash out bungles identified in the Debelle report.

“Let’s get it right, let’s have a warts-and-all look, let’s be transparent and open,” Family First MP Robert Brokenshire said.

But Premier Weatherill brushed off the upcoming inquiry and said he has no intention of cooperating.

“There are no doubts about the crystal clear findings that are made by Mr Debelle,” Mr Weatherill said.

“No serious commentator would seriously suggest I would turn up to such a political circus.”

Unlike public servants, government ministers are not compelled to attend.
