Sydney families hit by cost of living pressures

FIRST ON 7: The cost of living in Sydney has become so expensive almost half of all families in a new survey say they would consider moving somewhere cheaper.

They are being hammered by higher food, fuel, and energy costs. But a leading economist says we have never had it so good.

As a mum with two bubs, Silvia Yap, says she is feeling the pinch.

"Yeah, every day is more expensive, especially all the baby stuff," she said.

According to the NRMA, cost of living pressures are biting harder than ever.

"For large parts of Sydney, people are really struggling," NRMA spokesperson Tony Stuart said.

The NRMA survey found 90 per cent were paying an extra $100 a week for food, with 53 per cent facing higher transport and fuel costs - and 34 per cent using credit to pay household bills.

But not everyone thinks times are tough.

"And while we're paying more for our basket of groceries, we're also receiving more at the end of the day in our fortnightly pay," economist Stephen Koukoulas said.

Koukoulas argues that in past six years family incomes have risen by $26,000. And while costs are up, taxes and rates are down. The net effect; we are $14,000 better off.

And although the average Australian family might be better off, the NRMA survey finds 44 per cent of its Sydney respondents are thinking of moving because it is just too expensive.

"If it continues to be like this, then maybe we're thinking to move," Silvia Yap said.
