New tool to track fuel prices

FIRST ON 7: Sydney drivers are being given a new tool to track down the city's cheapest petrol.

A network of price spotters is using Facebook to find bargains at the bowser in Queensland, and it is catching on with consumers in Sydney.

Paying $1.55/litre for petrol is tough enough, but it is even more annoying seeing it cheaper down the road.

Fed up with paying too much for petrol, events manager Belinda Maund, has taken action.

"There are other sites where you can go on and view fuel prices, but I thought 'wouldn't it be great if there was actually live sharing in the social media'", she said.

Belinda has set up a Facebook page, where drivers can report cheap or expensive fuel.

It has been popular with Queensland drivers, and now she has replicated the site in Sydney, where a few kilometres can mean a big difference in what we pay at the bowser.

"I just thought, guys if you can tell me what your prices are when you're out and about on the road, I'll reshare them and see if we can give some sort of a difference," Belinda said.

The cost to us depends on the competition. Sydney is a flooded market so prices are unstable.

"I think it's great news that consumers have another tool now where they can shop around to get the best tool when it comes to petrol," Tom Godfrey from Choice said.

Belinda has no direct contact with the petrol stations and she does not make any money from the page. She simply wants to see people power beat the system.

"Just get on the page and like and lets get a voice," she said.
