Arrest over alleged Sydney bomb plot

A man has been arrested over an alleged plot to blow up a Sydney hospital.

For legal reasons the man police have charged cannot be named or the hospital that has allegedly been targeted.

Detectives from The Rocks intercepted the man last night as he arrived in Sydney on a plane from Malta.

Police allegedly discovered an improvised explosive device when they raided the man's home at Albion Park, south of Wollongong.

Other chemicals and equipment were also found on April 9, but the 42-year-old had already left the country.

It is alleged the man had a particular grievance against a doctor who had been treating him.

Strike Force Crichton was formed, and the man was taken into custody at 10.30pm last night.

He faced Central Local Court late today, charged with manufacturing an explosive device with intent to injure.

Tonight the man is undergoing a mental health assessment.
