Scott ready to tackle transplant games

An Adelaide man who has received a second chance at life is about to take off to South Africa for the World Transplant Games.

Scott Miller trains for two hours every day - cycling, running and swimming – with a zest for life thanks to a special gift.

“My father donated one of his kidney’s 17 years ago,” he said.

“I’m only 36, but inside of me I have got a 56-year-old kidney.”

He is travelling to South Africa this month to compete in eight events at his fourth World Transplant Games.

His wife Zoie, who has had a double lung transplant – is competing too.

“I waited two years for my transplant, so I was on oxygen for 24 hours a day,” she told 7News.

“I wouldn’t be here without my transplant.”

The couple met at the games 15 years ago, and now has two foster children.

After these games, Scott’s next goal is to complete a full ironman triathlon in Melbourne next year.

“I don’t want to get to the point where my kidney transplant has runs its course and think ‘have I, you know, not done anything in my life?’,” he said.

Up to 1700 Australians are waiting for an organ.

Just one donor can save ten lives.

“There’s been 216 donors this year in Australia, which has led to over 550 transplantations,” Dr Sally Tideman from DonateLife said.
