Police make dramatic arrest on Port Rd

Motorists on Adelaide’s Port Rd feared for their lives as police swooped on a man wanted for serious traffic offences this afternoon.

Officers had to terminate two earlier high speed chases, but managed to trap their target at Woodville Park.

Police dragged the man from an allegedly stolen car after cornering him on a median strip just before 1pm.

Motorists said the car had been speeding at over 100 kilometres an hour along Port Rd trying to evade police.

“The fella in a hot VR (commodore) come cruising down opposite side of the road and we nearly pulled out and almost cleaned us up, done about a 180 skid and ended up near the middle of the median strip,” one witness told 7News.

Traffic was backed up as officers handcuffed and searched the suspect.

He allegedly sparked two earlier high speed chases, one at 8am in Kilburn and the other at 9.30am at Mile End.

Police terminated both pursuits because the public risk was too high.

Drivers on Port Rd said they were lucky.

“Unbelievable, if we just would have pulled out while we were just about to do, we would have got cleaned up,” a motorist said.

“Could have been your parents, could have been my parents pulling out, someone could have got injured.”

The 31-year-old was taken to the Port Adelaide Police Station for questioning and is expected to face a raft of charges including engaging in a police pursuit and illegal use.
