Charger blamed for Elizabeth Downs house fire

A house fire in Adelaide’s northern suburbs that caused $100,000 damage is being blamed on an overheated battery charger.

Investigators said an old battery charger for remote security shutters sparked the blaze in the front bedroom of the Elizabeth Downs home this morning.

Flames reached the roof of the house and have destroyed recent renovations on the property.

Owner of the home Mick Jones told 7News he was devastated by the fire and shocked it was caused by the charging unit.

“What can you do?” he said.

“Like you know, you just plug them in and charge up your batteries, you know.”

The 59-year-old is insured, but said his family all live interstate.

“I got no one to go to, see what happens, see if a mate will put me up or whatever,” he said.
