The first time mother claims she was walking alone along a dimly lit street when she was approached from behind by the unknown predator.

She said she screamed for help as the man grabbed her hand bag before he fled into nearby Home Street.

The victim told crime reporter Cameron Baud she believes the man followed her the 400 metre walk from a tram stop on Plenty Road.

"I heard the walking steps become running it happened very fast," she said.

Catherine was in deep shock and spent a night in hospital after suffering cuts and grazes to her hands.

The bag contained her purse, mobile phone and keys.
