Woman rescued after falling off cliff

A woman is recovering in hospital after surviving a 60-metre cliff fall near Bells Beach on Victoria's Surf Coast.

The 56-year-old woman slipped from a high cliff at Point Addis and landed on a rocky alcove below.

She was spotted by a member of public who raised the alarm at around 11am this morning.

She was treated by emergency crews at the scene for 90 minutes, and carried on a stretcher to a waiting air ambulance before being flown to the Alfred Hospital.

"It was a difficult operation," Anglesea Police Sergeant Kevin Warburton told reporters at the scene. "It was quite windy and blustery for the rescue teams, but it was a good result."

The woman, believed to be from Torquay, suffered serious, but non life-threatening leg and head injuries.

She remained conscious throughout the rescue operation, which involved CFA and SES rescue teams and Police Airwing.

Police say they are still investigating why the woman was in a secluded area and what led to the fall.
