MAC funds for accident victims, not roads, lawyers say

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill is on a collision course with the Law Society for using Motor Accident Commission funds to fix dodgy roads.

Fresh from delivering his first budget as Treasurer, Mr Weatherill has also locked horns with the Opposition leader over state debt on radio this morning.

The Premier used a $100 million windfall from the MAC to fix roads, but lawyers say that money should be compensating accident victims.

“The Government shouldn’t be taking out of the Motor Accident Commission fund, which is there for for victims, to fix up curbs and roadways,” Morry Bailes from the Law Society said.

And while Premier Weatherill dismissed all questions from 7News on the new car parking tax at yesterday’s budget lock-up, but today he was forecasting exemptions for some city businesses.

“I’d like to see what we can do about that and make some announcements soon,” Mr Weatherill said.

Opposition leader Steven Marshall said he would welcome any change the Government makes to it.
