Fruit fly outbreak in suburban Adelaide

A fruit fly outbreak has been declared in Adelaide’s inner northern suburbs.

BiosecuritySA says it was confirmed after a fertile female Mediterranean fruit fly was found in a trap at Kilburn.

A 1.5 kilometre quarantine zone has been created around the site of the discovery.

The quarantine zone is located near the intersection of Churchill and Regency Rds, and includes parts of the suburbs of Regency Park, Dudley Park, Blair Athol and Kilburn.

The eradication response will continue for 10 to 12 weeks after the last wild fruit fly is found.

Geoff Raven from Biosecurity SA said it was important that people helped to keep the outbreak contained.

“People within the quarantine zones must not remove fresh fruit, fruiting vegetables or garden waste from their properties, or compost fruit and vegetables, during the eradication program,” he said.

“However, fruit and vegetable waste can be placed in green waste bins as usual.”
