WATCH: Heartwarming moment man learns his wife can donate her kidney to him

The heartwarming moment a US man heard his wife was going to donate her kidney to him has been caught in an emotional video.

Steve Winfree, from Tennessee, broke down in tears after learning his wife Heather was a kidney donor match.

She hid the surprise in a packet of baseball cards, revealing she can donate her kidney to him on a specially made card with his face on it.

Winfree started dialysis for a kidney disease in November and was in need of a transplant.

In the video Winfree has no idea that strategically placed among a pack of baseball cards was one with his own likeness on it.

After discovering the card and flipping it over, Winfree starts to read what he thinks might be a thoughtful card customised to raise his spirits.

The card revealed that his wife was a match and would be his donor.

What followed were some pretty emotional moments for the couple.

They both told MLB.com that opening baseball cards had become a stress reliever for them throughout his health battle, so it only made sense to use cards when making the big reveal.

“There were a lot of times where he would be in the hospital and I would grab a pack and we would open them,” Mrs Winfree explained to MLB.com.

“The low-key fun gets our minds off of the every day stresses.”

“She kept saying, ‘You have a special insert there,’ ” Mr Winfree added.

“I knew something was up because she never films me.”

The filming and the word “recipient” appearing where a player’s position usually is may have ultimately given it away, but the moment Mrs Winfree confirmed her plans to donate her kidney was the moment he’ll never forget.

“I saw it coming,” he said.

“But I lost it and I asked her, ‘You want to save my life?’ ”
