Man attacked by shark off NSW south coast

A man is in a serious condition after being attacked by a shark on the NSW south coast.

It happened off Bombo Beach at Kiama just after 7pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to the beach after receiving reports a 22-year-old Kiama Downs man had been attacked while surfing at the northern end of the beach.

The man has suffered severe bites to his thigh and hand although his exact condition is not yet known.

He told police he had been attacked about 100 metres off shore but he did not see the shark.

A friend helped him to the beach where they called for help.

The man was treated at the scene for hand and leg injuries and was flown to St George Hospital.
