Hit-and-run drivers strike down machete-wielding attacker

Police in California are searching for two hit-and-run drivers who knocked down a machete-wielding man who attacked several cars in the street.

Video of the crazed attack that occurred around 3am Monday in Oakland shows the 25-year-old man standing in the middle of the road, swinging a large knife at random cars as they pass.

He struck a number of vehicles, apparently smashing at least one window as they drove through the intersection.

The knife strikes one red sedan that appears to double back and swings around in an apparent effort at hitting the assailant.

"They gonna run this n-----r over," says the person recording the video as the man smashes the machete into the car.

The man jumps out of the way of the red sedan, only to have white sedan slam into him and carry him several metres down the road.

Police sirens are heard in the distance, drawing ever closer. But when police arrive at the scene the man hides the machete and stands on the footpath and the cruisers drive straight by.

"Hey! Where you going?" the man with camera screams at the police. "He's got a f---ing machete."

"This dude got ran over twice," some else said.

They soon returned and arrested the man who suffered minor injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital and placed psychiatric watch, ABC7 reports.

Police are now searching for the two drivers who fled the scene, wanted on suspicious of assault with a deadly weapon.

Witnesses were interviewed and there is a $5,000 reward on offer for information leading to an arrest.
