A US man has been commended for his bravery after he leaped on to train tracks to save a fellow commuter at a Philadelphia subway station. But he's also been told not to do it again.

Surveillance video shows Alfred McNamee falling over the edge of the platform. Charles Collins, 28, immediately jumped down to help Mr McNamee while others froze and looked on in horror, Sky News reported.

Mr McNamee suffered a broken back, an injured knee, broken ribs and a spleen injury.
Mr Collins is reportedly recovering from a minor leg injury.

Public transport officials praised Mr Collins but said they would prefer if people did not go on to the tracks for any reason.

Spokesman Manny Smith told media in a statement the safer thing to do would have been to alert the station cashier.

“The hero in the Eagles jacket does appear to have looked to see if there was a train coming before hopping on to the tracks — so perhaps it would be even better if people didn't fall on to the tracks,” Smith said.
