A Sydney man who was dubbed 'too fat to fight for IS' has tried to make contact with his former fiancee via Facebook.

Omar El Baf recently reached out to his former love via the social networking website months after he fled to Syria with three of his brothers.

This is the first sign that he is alive since he and his brothers disappeared after saying they had won a trip to Thailand, reports Fairfax media.

The woman was reportedly so upset that she blocked him removing all trace of the conversation, dashing a crucial opportunity for police to investigate his whereabouts.

The Elbaf brothers, from Yagoona, went to Syria in November and even got their parents to drive them to the airport.

But they later messaged their sister saying 'see you in paradise' and that was the last trace heard from the men.

Their heartbroken family have appealed for them to come back to Australia but have had no contact until now.

Elbaf had spent thousands of dollars on a honeymoon and furniture to make a home with his bride when he disappeared.

The four brothers from Sydney's south-west left Australia to fight in Syria and their parents say they had no idea what inspired the men to join IS.

Two of the brothers were branded too fat to be of any use to the militants by an Islamic leader and the youngest, Taha, was described as studious and quiet.

A close friend of the family told Fairfax Media the jilted fiancee was furious and devastated by his sudden departure via Thailand.
