Teen rescued after being buried alive

An American boy is lucky to be alive after surviving half an hour buried in sand.

Matt Mina was building sand tunnels on a Californian beach when the wall caved in.

Dozens of beach goers tried to dig out the 17-year-old year old who was buried over two metres deep. They were caught out by sand that kept pouring into the hole.

When he was trapped, underground, Mina's hands were pinned behind him. He used his head to create a small pocket of air. He counted each breath and came in and out of consciousness.

He couldn't hear the massive above-ground effort to unearth him. He told CBS Los Angeles, "The helplessness you feel when you're underground -it's like, you think you can just pull yourself out, but you can't. It's so heavy."

Firefighters eventually managed to pull him out 30 minutes after falling in. Although he was unconscious at first, he has since made a full recovery.

This dramatic video footage shows the desperate attempts by other people on the beach to save Mina.
