Sydney grinds to a halt as two truck smashes gridlock major roads

The day on the roads started badly for Sydney motorists on Wednesday morning and it was not much better by the evening.

Early in the day the M5 city bound was blocked when a truck fire became an inferno.

Drivers were again queuing in the afternoon after a truck accident closed the Harbour Tunnel and Cahill Expressway.

It was bumper to bumper beyond the bridge as motorists banked up right across the city, all because of a toppled trailer that spread its load of sandy soil and rocks across the Cahill Expressway’s city exit.

Some drivers even got out of their cars to clear the debris with city bound traffic choked, the harbour tunnel shutdown and the road crawling to a standstill.

Seven News has seen traffic video of the crash that shows the truck approaching the bend at speed and toppling.

Reports the driver was trying to avoid another vehicle have proven untrue.

Witnesses say the truck and debris narrowly missed passing traffic and that it’s a miracle no one was killed.

A truck inferno on the M5 at Ingleburn early on Wednesday morning further inflamed the traffic problems.

All city-bound lanes were shut as firefighters tried to control the blaze.

The driver was unhurt after managing to escape, unlike those caught in the afternoon’s gridlock.
