The yellow school bus was travelling in an eastbound direction when it hit a Ford Mustang, then hit a pillar at a nearby cemetery before crashing head-on into the MTA bus.

Officials confirmed the school bus driver died at the scene.

A further five passengers on the MTA bus were also killed in the crash. Eight other people onboard the MTA bus were rushed to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

A second person onboard the school bus, which was on its way to pick up students for the school day, remains in hospital.

Emergency crews remain at the scene with the school bus wedged in the side of the commuter bus outside a Baltimore cemetery.

Witnesses described the crash scene as "sounding like a train wreck", saying they felt the "ground shake" at the moment of impact.

"That's horrible," one witness told local media. "It just opened up the side of the bus."

"There’s no skid marks so something catastrophic took place and we are continuing to investigate," a Baltimore police spokesperson said.

"Basically the impact ripped the entire driver's side off the bus.

"(Those on the bus) were on their way to make a living. Our hearts and prayers go out to them and their families."

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
