Boo Boris boo: Johnson heckled off stage during maiden speech

And the crowd screamed boo at the man dubbed a "political jester" in European newspapers....

Boris Johnson aka the 'King of Blunder' has been publicly embarrassed yet again when he was literally booed off stage during a Bastille Day celebratory luncheon during his maiden speech as British Foreign Secretary.

The ever-quirky and always entertaining former London mayor, well-known for his antics and often embarrassing public stunts was heckled by a bereft crowd of officials and guests.

The public gaffe occurred at a function held at the French ambassador’s residence in London.

While addressing the media Johnson stated he was trying to "reassure everybody about Brexit".

He also dismissed comments by French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault that he had “lied a lot” during the Brexit campaign.

Johnson claimed he had received a “charming letter” from his new French counterpart.

Later on in the event Johnson then proceeded to inform invited guests at function, "We will intensify the cooperation and partnership at an inter-governmental level, and forge a new global role," he stated.

The announcement was quickly overshadowed by a loud round of boos and heckles from the unimpressed audience.

It was then that the newly appointed secretary was left with no other option then to awkwardly leave the podium.

Leaders were left stunned around the globe with the colourful and often entertaining Johnson was appointed to the top job by newly elected Prime Minister Theresa May earlier in the week.

The new PM took over from David Cameron on Wednesday.

Cameron stepped down as PM following the June 23 vote that sent shockwaves around the world, sparking widespread fears of a worldwide economic downturn.

Following six years as Cameron’s interior minister, May has now replaced him.

She has since removed long-serving finance minister George Osborne along with Brexit-campaigning justice secretary Michael Gove.

However her appointment of the notoriously eccentric Johnson has left political commentators stunned.

However Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says Boris Johnson will be a constructive partner with Australia.

"Boris Johnson will make a significant contribution to British relations with countries around the world and I'm particularly pleased that he has such a personal connection with Australia," Ms Bishop told reporters in Perth on Friday.
