Teacher arrested after smacking student in Texas classroom
A US high school teacher has been arrested after she was filmed hitting a student at least five times during class.
Geography teacher Mary Hastings swiped the student’s work papers off his desk before smacking him multiple times over the head and arm while yelling: “because you’re stopping him from graduating you idiot a**”.
The student raises his hand over his head to stop the 63-year-old from landing any blows to his face, and when he questions her about the assault, she then mocks him in front of his peers.
Hastings was immediately removed from the classroom and placed on paid leave following the incident, Beaumont Independent School District spokeswoman Nakisha Burns said in a statement.
"BISD does not condone employees abusing any child and will not tolerate such conduct," she said.
"The teacher was immediately removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave pending action on her contract."
Hastings, who has been a teacher at Ozen High School in Texas for the past three years, was arrested on a misdemeanor count of assault and posted $2500 bond.
The boy can be seen laughing in the video and did not appear to be hurt in the altercation.
