Fire station reveals just how often oblivious drivers block their path

A Sydney fire brigade has taken to social media to appeal to motorists to get out of the way when they see their lights and hear their sirens approaching.

A video montage from the Mount Druitt Fire Station shows a series of oblivious drivers blocking the paths of fire trucks as they rush to emergency call outs.

"When we are coming to help you, seconds count,” it wrote under its Facebook post.

“How motorists react makes a massive difference to how quickly we can get there.”

And, as the clip shows, many motorists react poorly.

At the beginning of the clip a white Toyota Yaris turns into a roundabout in front of the approaching truck, delaying its passage through the intersection.

In the next segment a car remains in its lane as a beeping fire truck, lights and claxon blaring, approaches from behind. Even the flashing headlights of an oncoming vehicle don’t convince the driver to move.

Amazingly, all of the incidents in the video were filmed within a 24 hour period, the fire station said.

“We're sure you've you’ve (sic) all seen these kinds of videos before, but we thought we'd share our version,” the post read.

“Bear in mind this clip was filmed over one 24 hour shift only.

“This is not a highlights reel from weeks of footage!”

As the nearly two minute long video continues, driver after driver leaves it until the last minute to move aside, does not move at all or tries to beat the approaching emergency vehicle through intersections.

“Don’t panic; Carefully pull to the left; Don’t stop suddenly,” the video appeals at its conclusion.

“It could be you who needs us.”

The video was posted last week and has so far been shared more than 8000 times and has attracted hundreds of comments scathing towards the featured motorists.
