Sydney youths scheduled violent brawls on Facebook
Youths involved in two separate brawls that rocked Sydney within the past 10 days have admitted that both of the shockingly violent attacks were organised on social media.
Heavily armed police officers made a surprise early morning call to one residence in Granville, where they arrest their first suspect.
Police charged the 18-year-old boy with three counts of affray for his involvement in a large brawl in downtown Parramatta on Tuesday.
Up to 50 people were involved in the shocking fight that took over a busy intersection, bringing traffic to a standstill.
As disturbing as the images are, it’s an unfortunately familiar sight.
Just nine days ago, dozens of Ambarvale school girls armed themselves with knives and baseball bats to head into combat.
Four were charged, including one 17-year-old teen who was seen brandishing a bat in the video that went viral after the fight.
In an exclusive interview with 7 News, the girl said the fight started online, when other girls allegedly started bullying her disabled younger sister.
“One of the girls said they'd push her off a cliff. And they were laughing at her saying she deserved what she got,” she said.
But despite wielding a bat, she said some of the girls went to far with their choice of weapons.
“I don't know how the knives came out, that really shocked me.”
Community elders are meeting with the girls and their parents over the next few weeks.
Uncle Dave, a community elder, said parents play a large role in the behavior of their children.
“If you're not going to heal the mum's and dad's, you're not going to heal the kids.”
He believes Facebook and the ability to misuse social media is a ‘big problem’.
With so many fights being posted on social media, it makes work a whole lot easier for police.
They said say the message is simple - get involved in this type of violence and you can expect a knock at the door.
The teenage girl involved in the Ambarvle fight shared some words of wisdom for her peers:
“Try to avoid it, because it's not worth it.”
