Ambulance officer punched in the face by patient in Newcastle

A man has been charged with assaulting a paramedic in Newcastle last night.

The man allegedly punched a NSW Ambulance paramedic twice in the face while he was being transported to the Mater Hospital at Waratah on Monday evening.

According to police, the 48-year-old was in a triage area when he attempted to leave the trolley, causing it to become unstable.

He allegedly attacked the 41-year-old paramedic when he attempted to steady the trolley.

The victim was treated for minor injuries.

Newcastle City Local Area Command police were called. They arrested the man and took him to the Waratah Police Station where he was charged with assault.

The man is due to face court in Newcastle on January 21.

The incident comes after a paramedic in Queensland was punched 60 times by a man he had been treating.

Brad Johnson was left bloodied and bruised by a drug affected patient who lashed out dozens of times in an incident revealed earlier this week.

"I was so lucky I didn't take a severe blow to the temple, or loose an eye or fracture a jaw. It could've so easily been much worse," Mr Johnson said.

A 25-year-old was charged with the serious assault of a public officer after that attack.
