Asbestos concern halts homes plan

A residential development proposed for Mahomets Flats six years ago may not go ahead because of contamination at the 8ha site.

The City of Greater Geraldton’s agenda forum on Tuesday was told an investigation required by the Department of Environmental Regulation had identified asbestos-containing material within the basin portion of the Olive Street site.

An officer’s report to the council said the City had spent $1.24 million on the project.

The city council will next Tuesday consider whether to cease work on the residential subdivision and commit loan funds for remediation of the site to create public open space.
