East Pilbara set to increase CCTV coverage

The number of CCTV cameras across the East Pilbara is likely to increase after the State Government announced it would commit $7 million in its 2015-16 State Budget to improve local council CCTV networks.

The Shire of East Pilbara already has more than 50 cameras across its towns which cover the airport, public spaces, Shire facilities and local tips.

Shire technical services director Rick Miller said the Shire planned to align its strategy to increase and upgrade its CCTV networks with the recent funding announcement.

"The cameras have proven beneficial in a number of circumstances in that they have assisted police identify perpetrators of crimes and antisocial behaviours and act as a visible deterrent," he said.

"We are doing a wireless upgrade and it is anticipated that the CCTV network will become much more user-friendly and consequently more criminal and antisocial activities will be detected and prosecuted."

The neighbouring Town of Port Hedland Council has 32 CCTV cameras across South and Port Hedland and plans to seek State Government funding to upgrade its network.
