Meerkat mum passes out feeding her pups

Every new mother will sympathise with this meerkat mum.

Akili was feeding her two pups at Werribee Open Zoo, when she suddenly passed out from what can only be described as utter exhaustion from the trials and tribulations of motherhood.

The baby meekats have not ventured far from their mother's side since and there have been several sleepless nights.

A video camera was set up in the clan's burrow so that zookeepers could monitor their movements.

"During the first few nights the group didn't get much sleep as they adjusted to their new routine of caring for the youngsters," zookeeper Denny Burgoyen said.

"As the days went on however, they became more relaxed and mum very quickly perfected the skill of being able to sleep and nurse at the same time."

Now six weeks old and much more independent, the young meerkats have left their burrow and will hopefully give their mum a much-needed break.
