WA paceman Nathan Coulter-Nile has a slight calf strain but is expected to be able to bowl in South Australia’s second innings of the Sheffield Shield match at Glenelg.

The fast bowler, who was making his first appearance for the Warriors since breaking down with a severe hamstring tear last November – his fifth hamstring injury of the year - strained his left calf during his 14th over against the Redbacks yesterday.

A WACA spokesman said Coulter-Nile was expected to bat in WA’s first innings.

“He was held back from bowling in the first innings with the expectation that he will be able to bowl in the second,” the spokesman said.

The Warriors were 2-133, with Adam Voges (31 not out) and Michael Klinger (35 not out) building a solid partnership, after the Redbacks were dismissed for 469.

Ashton Agar finished with 5-133 as the WA bowlers toiled on the placid surface.

Coulter-Nile has experienced repeated hamstring problems with five separate injuries last year and two bouts of surgery.

He suffered tears in the shield match against Tasmania last February and then did it again in the World T20 in Bangladesh last March.

And he got through just one match for Delhi in last year’s Indian Premier League.

Three months of rehabilitation followed but he underwent surgery last July after the problem recurred during training at the national cricket centre.

He played for the Perth Scorchers at last year’s Champion’s League in India but his return to the national one-day team was short-lived when he required surgery last November after breaking down at the MCG.
