Western Australia’s bid to end their 16-year Sheffield Shield drought has become tougher with State player of the year Jason Behrendorff out of action with a spinal stress fracture.

The injury is also likely to prevent Behrendorff being considered for the Test tours of the West Indies and England this year.

Behrendorff was diagnosed with the fracture on Monday night and will miss the rest of the season.

WACA officials told thewest.com.au on Monday that the left-armer would be rested from the game against South Australia starting on Saturday in a bid to prevent his back soreness developing into a more serious injury.

Behrendorff has bowled 215.5 overs this season for the Perth Scorchers, the Warriors and club team Subiaco-Floreat.

Fellow quick Nathan Coulter-Nile, who returned to action for the Scorchers last week after two months out of action with a hamstring tear, will not be considered for the Redbacks match at the WACA Ground.

WA played five shield matches in as many weeks and Coulter-Nile will be eased back into action when he has increased his bowling load at training.

Michael Hogan and Simon Mackin will lead the attack against SA with at least one of Nathan Rimmington, Ryan Duffield and Andrew Tye also playing.
