Jetty celebrates 150th in style

Hundreds of people enjoyed the first dinner at the end of Busselton Jetty to celebrate the structure's 150th anniversary on Friday night.

An initiative of the Busselton Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the event saw guests taken out to the end of the jetty by boat and train before enjoying a beautiful sunset at the end of the jetty.

A humorous sketch revealed the history of the jetty and guests were also entertained by Cathrine Summers and her band.

An auction of donated items raised $13,000 for Telethon on the evening, with the help of auctioneer Brad Fraser.

Chamber chief executive Ray McMillan said there had been an overwhelmingly positive response from the 340 guests.

"Many guests arrived with no expectations and certainly unsure of what would unfold and were completely caught up in the whole experience," he said.

"I think the success was due significantly to the whole vision of presenting a black tie dinner at the end of the Busselton Jetty. If we had diluted that vision, I am not sure that we would have achieved the same result."

The logistics of transporting all the infrastructure, catering, beverages and red carpet to the end of the jetty was the most challenging aspect of the night.

However, Mr McMillan said it was important to know it could be done. He thanked the City of Busselton and its works crew for their willingness to go the extra distance for the event.
