Busselton’s Rural Clinical School has welcomed seven new students this week, for what will now be their home for the next year.

The students from Notre Dame University and the University of WA are set to become familiar faces in the community as they gain hands-on experience at local GP surgeries and Busselton Hospital.

The students will be challenged by being away from home, while juggling theory and practical work.

Head medical co-ordinator Sarah Moore, who was part of the original Rural Clinical School in Kalgoorlie in 2002 said the students would learn what it was like to be a doctor in a small community.

“The students will cover a range of topics this year from general surgery to gynaecology and will be involved with community projects, ” she said

“We encourage all students to be active in the community while they are here and understand the rewards and challenges faced by rural doctors.”

The Busselton branch opened in 2008 and has since offered more than 40 students the chance to experience rural medicine.
