Tasmanian woman faces 122 charges over alleged internet dating fraud

A Tasmanian woman accused of swindling almost a quarter of a million dollars from a man she met on an internet dating site has been remanded in custody.

Police allege 61-year-old Robyn Clare Pearce from Sandford dishonestly obtained $247,000 from a 64-year-old man from New South Wales over three years to 2010.

She is due back in court next month to face 122 counts of dishonestly acquiring a financial advantage.

Pearce did not make any pleas when she appeared in the Magistrates Court in Hobart yesterday and will be remanded in custody until next month.

Acting Sergeant Nikala Parsons advised people using online dating sites to take care when considering handing over money.

"Essentially, if any requests are made for funds, unless you personally know these people or you're aware of their personal circumstances, I wouldn't be recommending transferring money to these people by loan or as a gift," she said.
