Tough rules for SW marron

Department of Fisheries authorities have warned marron fishers to obey regulations ahead of the recreational season, which started at 12pm yesterday.

Department media liaison Donna Cole said there were about 4300 country-based marron licence holders in 2014 and most were in the South West.

Department of Fisheries acting southern region compliance manager Brett Hopley said fisheries officers would patrol waterways during the season.

"There will be day and night patrols of the waterways, and roadside inspections of vehicles throughout the season," he said.

Department of Fisheries principal management officer Graeme Baudains said fishers should have a licence, and ensure they were familiar with possession, bag and size limits as well as restrictions on some types of fishing gear.

"Be aware of the rules specific to where you fish and enjoy the opportunity,"

Mr Baudains said the rules were enforced to keep marron fishing sustainable.

Suspicious fishing activity can be reported to the FishWatch number 1800 815 507.

Information on marron fishing rules can be found online or at Fisheries offices.
